  • Continued presence of Canada geese on campus

This message is being sent on behalf of Alan Dunn, associate vice-president, Facilities and Ancillary Services and Murray Lapp, vice-president, Human Resources and Services, UOIT.

We wanted to share with you that we had media activity on campus today as a result of a concerned citizen notifying Durham College and a number of media outlets about the death of two goslings on May 10.

As with other public spaces, occasionally Canada geese encroach on campus areas. Both the college and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology are proactive in ensuring geese are dissuaded from nesting in unsafe places, in favour of their natural habitat. In spite of these efforts, some geese have continued to nest on the rooftops and high ledges around campus. The two goslings fell from the roof of the Science building at the Oshawa campus.

As part of our efforts to ensure the safety of our campus community, the college holds a Migratory Bird Damage and Danger Permit from Environment Canada to allow geese control. We also retain the services of a licenced contractor to help dissuade geese from nesting near or on buildings.

On May 10, the contractor conducted a routine, scheduled visit using sound horns to dissuade geese from nesting on campus. The contractor left campus by 1 p.m.

The goslings were reported to members of Campus Security, who removed the birds.

  • New Hydration Station in South Wing

Have you seen the new Hydration Station in the South Wing? It's located near the SW 112/113 bathrooms and was paid entirely with rebate funds from the toner recycling program. The Lexmark Rebate Program began in October 2011 and has generated approximately $1000 a year since then.

Regular cartridges without this licence/agreement sold at regular prices are also available. Regular cartridges are also recyclable at no cost through Lexmark Cartridge Collection Program.

Recycling these cartridges keeps them out of the waste stream and is a great choice for the environment and part of the college's sustainability efforts.
