  • Getting along with geese on campus

This time of year, the Canada geese seen around campus are nesting and can become protective and at times aggressive.

If you happen to be approached by a goose, some helpful tips to keep in mind are:

    • Geese have excellent vision and pay close attention to the eyes and body language of humans and other animals, so it’s best to remain calm and/or ignore the animal and continue on your way.
    • If a goose does become aggressive, maintain direct eye contact while facing your body directly towards it.
    • Do not turn your back or shoulders away, and don’t close or squint your eyes.
    • If a goose approaches you aggressively and hisses or spreads its wings, back away slowly, while ensuring your path is clear.
    • Do not cower, hide your face, turn your back or run.
    • Do not yell, kick or act hostile in any way.
    • If a goose flies up towards your face, duck or move away at a 90-degree angle to the direction of flight, while facing the goose.
