The Honourable Justice Leonard S. Tony Mandamin is Anishinaabe and member of the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island and he is the first Indigenous person in Ontario to receive a university degree in electrical engineering.

The Hydro One Leonard S. (Tony) Mandamin Awards are distributed annually to Indigenous students who are attending post-secondary institutions or training programs in Ontario with demonstrated financial need for contribution to education costs. Preference is given to students studying in the following academic programs: electrical and mechanical engineering including apprenticeships, skilled trades and technicians such as electrical engineering technology and technician programs, civil engineering technology and technician programs, electrician, power line technician, truck & coach technician, utility arborist, and meter technician, and also post-secondary programs in the electricity and energy industry relations disciplines such as computer science, business, information technology, environmental engineering, environmental science/studies, social sciences/humanities and indigenous studies.

Eligible students must demonstrate leadership skills and involvement in his/her community or extracurricular activities and must be returning to school the following year.
