Awards Details:

The Congress of Black Women of Canada, Ajax/Pickering chapter, is pleased to offer FOUR (4) annual $1,000 scholarship awards to graduating Grade 12 students pursuing post-secondary education in Fall 2021. The awards recognize individuals who self-identify as being a member of the Black or  African diaspora community on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and community involvement, and financial need. Payment of the award will be made directly to the student’s post-secondary institution.

 

Eligibility Criteria

 

  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada (female/male)
  • Self-identify as a member of the Black or African Diaspora community
  • Resides in Ajax or Pickering (Note: If you live outside of Ajax and Pickering, you are not eligible to apply for the scholarship award.)
  • Between 17 to 20 years of age as of the end of the year in which the scholarship is granted
  • Enrolled in a high school in Durham Region
  • Applied to a Canadian college or university in the fall semester of the year in which the scholarship is granted
  • Demonstrated financial need for funds to cover educational costs directly associated with the college/university specified in the application

 

 

 

Application Requirements

 

  • a statement detailing your extracurricular activities, community involvement and/or participation in volunteer activities
  • a brief personal statement that explains how you believe you meet the award criteria and outlines your academic achievements and most important accomplishments (maximum of 150 words)
  • two signed letters of reference from individuals in support of your application who can attest to your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, community involvement and/or participation in volunteer activities
  • a recent status sheet or student transcript from the secondary school at which you are currently enrolled

 

 

 

Interview Process

 

Candidates who have been selected for an interview with Education Committee members of Congress of Black Women of Canada, Ajax/Pickering chapter will be notified in early June 2021.

 

 

 

Notification of Decision

 

Applicants will be informed of the award decisions by email in June 2021.
