About TransCanada

For over 65 years, TransCanada has proudly operated the pipeline and power generation facilities that support a high standard of living for North Americans. Every day millions of people depend on us to provide the energy that they need to heat and cool their homes, cook their food, fuel their vehicles and power their businesses.

Through our Community Investment Program, we give back to the communities where we live and work because it's part of being an employer of choice, a good neighbour and a trusted community partner. Whether it's partnering with community groups or employee engagement and giving, we are committed to supporting strong, vibrant communities across North America.

Commitment to Education & Training

Within our Community Investment Program, we support educational initiatives that promote long-term capacity building in the communities where we live and work. This includes support for everything from basic education to the development of high-demand and transferable skills.

As part of our commitment to support education and training we have created the TransCanada Empower Communities Scholarships. These scholarships are designed to support students in the pursuit of their education and career goals, to encourage the development of a well-trained workforce, and to build capacity within communities.

TransCanada Trades Scholarship

The TransCanada Trades Scholarship is offered on an annual basis to up to 75 students from communities across TransCanada's Canadian footprint in the amount of $1,000 per student. The scholarship is targeted to students who are entering or enrolled in a qualifying trades program at a registered education institute.

Eligibility

You may be considered for the TransCanada Trades Scholarship if you meet the following criteria:

  1. You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  2. You are from a community near TransCanada's proposed projects, projects under construction and/or operating assets (see enclosed map);
  3. You are or will be enrolled in this calendar year in a full-time, post-secondary trades program relevant to the skill sets required by the energy industry including electrical, instrumentation, welding, millwright, pipefitter, machinist, heavy equipment operator, power operator, heavy duty mechanic, etc;
  4. You consent to communications with TransCanada regarding the scholarship and your progress throughout the program; and
  5. You provide all information required by TransCanada to verify statements made in this application, to administer payment and to maintain communications.
Application Process

The application process opens annually on January 15 and closes on April 15. Should this date fall on a weekend, applications will be accepted until the close of business on the following Monday. Applicants are required to complete all questions marked with an asterisk(*). There will be an opportunity to upload supporting documents at the end of the application for those applicants wishing to provide additional information.

Selection and Notification Process

TransCanada will consider the applicants' education and career goals, contributions made to their community, and financial barriers to education when selecting scholarship recipients. Preference will be given to students entering into the first year of their program, however students who have already completed their first year will also be considered. Successful applicants will be notified by June 1 of each year and asked to provide confirmation of enrollment in a registered education institute. Confirmation of enrollment must be provided before the scholarship funding will be provided.

Employment

The Scholarship does not include an offer of employment for recipients. We will, however, make reasonable efforts to provide access to work experience and employment opportunities for scholarship recipients where the skills and experience of the individual meets those required by TransCanada. Students who maintain communication with TransCanada are more likely to access these opportunities. All employment opportunities, including summer student or co-op student  positions will require application by the student in accordance with those employment deadlines.
