About TransCanada

For over 65 years, TransCanada has proudly operated the pipeline and power generation facilities that support a high standard of living for North Americans. Every day millions of people depend on us to provide the energy that they need to heat and cool their homes, cook their food, fuel their vehicles and power their businesses.

TransCanada constructs and operates our facilities near Indigenous communities throughout North America. Giving back to the communities where we operate has been part of our culture for decades and remains a priority. This includes a commitment to support learning opportunities for Indigenous people.

Commitment to Education & Training

Within our Community Investment Program, we support educational initiatives that promote long-term capacity building in the communities where we live and work. This includes support for everything from basic education to the development of high-demand and transferable skills.

As part of our commitment to support education and training we have created the TransCanada Empower Communities Scholarships. These scholarships are designed to support students in the pursuit of their education and career goals, to encourage the development of a well-trained workforce, and to build capacity within communities.

TransCanada Indigenous Legacy Scholarship

The TransCanada Indigenous Legacy Scholarship is offered on an annual basis to up to 25 students from communities across our Canadian footprint in the amount of $5,000 per student. The scholarship is for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students pursuing any full-time, post-secondary program at a registered education institute. Recipients are encouraged to apply to receive the scholarship on an annual basis, assuming satisfactory academic standing.

Eligibility

You may be considered for the TransCanada Indigenous Legacy Scholarship if you meet the following criteria:
  1. You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  2. You identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit;
  3. You are a member of an Indigenous community near TransCanada's proposed projects, projects under construction and/or operating assets (see enclosed map);
  4. You are or will be enrolled in this calendar year in a full-time, post-secondary program at a registered education institute;
  5. You consent to communications with TransCanada regarding the scholarship and your progress throughout the program; and
  6. You provide all information required by TransCanada to verify statements made in this application, to administer payment and to maintain communications.
Application Process

The application process opens annually on January 15 and closes on April 15. Should this date fall on a weekend, applications will be accepted until the close of business on the following Monday. Applicants are required to complete all questions marked with an asterisk(*). There will be an opportunity to upload supporting documents at the end of the application for those applicants wishing to provide additional information.

Selection and Notification Process

TransCanada will consider the applicants education and career goals, contributions made to their community, and financial barriers to education when selecting scholarship recipients. Successful applicants will be notified by June 1 of each year and asked to provide confirmation of enrollment in a registered education institute. Confirmation of enrollment must be provided before the scholarship funding will be provided.

Employment

The Scholarship does not include an offer of employment for recipients. We will, however, make reasonable efforts to provide access to work experience and employment opportunities for scholarship recipients where the skills and experience of the individual meets those required by TransCanada. Students who maintain communication with TransCanada are more likely to access these opportunities. All employment opportunities, including summer student or co-op student positions will require application by the student in accordance with those employment deadlines.
