Applied Arts is pleased to announce the second annual Georges Haroutiun Scholarship program.

The Georges Haroutiun Scholarships were established in 2016 to mark the magazine’s 30th anniversary. The program is named in honour of Applied Arts’s founder Georges Haroutiun, a notable graphic designer who launched the magazine in 1986 as a way to connect with industry professionals and celebrate Canadian creativity, both established and emerging.

Georges has always been a champion of young talent, stressing the important role youth play in energizing the creative community. Thus Applied Arts has consistently recognized, supported and celebrated the work of students, particularly through the Applied Arts Student Awards and Creative Futures programs.

In recognition of Georges Haroutiun’s contributions to the design industry, his legacy and his mentorship of students, — whether as art director of Applied Arts, in his days teaching at OCAD University, or now, in his “retirement” consulting on the magazine’s initiatives — we are thrilled to present these new scholarships in his honour.

We will award a total of $7,500 to post-secondary creative arts students in each of the following streams:

  • Advertising (1st place $1,500; runner-up $1,000)
  • Design (1st place $1,500; runner-up $1,000)
  • Image (1st place $1,500; runner-up $1,000)

To apply for the Georges Haroutiun Scholarships, students must complete an assignment and meet the conditions of eligibility. Only digital submissions will be accepted. Winners will be announced in summer 2017 and receive editorial coverage in Applied Arts’s print or online properties.
