The Orvil L. Davie Bursary Award was initiated in memory of Orvil L. Davie, the first chair of The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). The purpose of the fund is to encourage students to seek a career in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) industry by providing bursaries to those requiring financial assistance. Over 70% of the current fund balance consists of direct donations from companies in the HVACR industry.

Since 1988, the fund has provided financial assistance to more than 91 students across the country enrolled in HVACR programs. Recipients can apply the $1,000 award to registration/tuition fees, training material, or travel and living expenses related to their course of study.

Eligibility

Applicants must be seeking assistance to complete training in an accepted course subject directly related to the HVACR industry. A course subject must constitute the principle focus of the programme, such as sheet metal, refrigeration technology, gas fitter, mechanical engineering, etc. Programmes which only touch on these technologies (such as power engineering) are not eligible.

Consideration will be given to applicants in financial need based on an assessment by the student awards officer or equivalent. Priority will be given to those already enrolled in a programme but whose financial circumstances may force them to drop out short of completion. Applicants should be willing to allow HRAI the privilege of being informed regarding their successful completion of the course.

Application

Applications must be submitted by the student awards officer or equivalent of a recognized educational institution. An outline of the educational programme and associated costs must be submitted with the application. Copies of the application are available from your student awards/bursary officer or by contacting HRAI’s Sadia Zafar at 1-800-267-2231 ext. 265.

Applications are reviewed twice a year and the deadlines for submission are February 28 and November 30. Bursaries will be awarded by the Orvil Davie Fund Committee only when suitable candidates are determined and funds are available. A response can be expected within six weeks of the deadline.
