WILLIAM AND MARY KOSTASH AWARD FOR MEDIA ARTS

BACKGROUND:

William (1906-1994) and Mary Kostash (1915-2010) were long-standing Ukrainian Canadian community activists who had a special concern about the education and self-awareness of current and future generations of that community.  This award is made possible through an endowment established in 1989, on the occasion of the Kostashs’ fiftieth wedding anniversary.

CONDITIONS:

Awarded every second year for a project in film, video or the new media, that examines questions of Ukrainian Canadian identity as it is formed in the 21st Century in local and global contexts.   Works in progress and/or completed works will be considered.  Drama, documentary, experimental, educational, and other genres are acceptable.

EXPLANATION:    

Since the inception of this Award, when it was titled “for Film and Video Arts,” the technologies driving media arts have proliferated globally, producing exciting and innovative forms of artistic expression no longer encompassed by the traditional media of film and video. 

SUBMISSION:          

Artistic productions should be delivered by: two full resolution DVDs plus one DVD of the program in a Quicktime format that is sized and compressed for web delivery.  Programs created for the web and to personalized home pages, streamed by iPhone apps, and embedded in blogs are acceptable.  Such art may include digital art, computer graphics, computer animation, virtual art, internet art, interactive art technologies, and computer robotics.

Open to Grant MacEwan University students and independent film, video, or new media producers.

Successful applicants must forward three copies (2-full resolution, 1 compressed for web)of their completed project to the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre within one year of receiving this award.

Successful applicants must acknowledge the assistance of the William and Mary Kostash Award for Media Arts in all promotional materials and productions of the project for which the award is granted.  Programs that have received the award may be used by the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre for educational purposes, exhibition, web delivery and community cable airing.

Chosen by selection committee, projects will be evaluated on the basis of how well they meet the application criteria (2 points), how successfully they contribute to increasing the cultural self-awareness of Ukrainian Canadians (10 points), structure and mechanics (7 points), artistic merit of the project (7 points), and feasibility (4 points).

If the Selection Committee feels there is no qualified applicant in any one year, the award will not be given for that year.

Applicants may also include information about their education and life experiences, awards, and letters of support.

Applicants are encouraged to include examples of past works or excerpts of works in progress.  All submitted materials must be clearly marked with the applicant’s name and address.  For film or video materials, please indicate the length and format as well.
