Anna Pidruchney Award for New Writers

Criteria

Awarded annually for a literary work which includes Ukrainian content (i.e., subject matter, theme, characters, or setting). The Ukrainian content may be from any historical period or country.

Genre: Eligible works of literary fiction, that being poetry, short stories, novels, plays, personal essays or memoirs are acceptable. However, the following types of texts are not eligible: (i) academic or scholarly work, (ii) graduate dissertations, term papers or research reports, (iii) non-fiction (book-length or shorter pieces), (iv) biography (book-length or shorter pieces).

Only one submission is allowed per applicant, and must not exceed 5000 words.

Open to MacEwan students and other authors (up to 35 years of age). Previous recipients of this award are not eligible.

The award will be granted for English-language and Ukrainian-language submissions in alternating years. For example, in odd-numbered years (i.e., 2013) the award will be for an English-language work. In even-numbered years the award will be for a Ukrainian language work.

Applications are considered in the year prior to that when the award is granted. For example, applications for the 2015 (English-language) award are submitted in 2014; applications for the 2016 (Ukrainian-language) award are submitted in 2015, and so on.

Successful candidates must acknowledge the assistance of the award in promotional materials and publications of literary work for which the award is granted.

A selection committee will choose the recipient for the Anna Pidruchney Award for New Writers.
The successful applicant will be notified via mail. Appeals will be not considered, as the committee selections are final.

Apply in writing, including a copy of the completed work.  Only one entry per applicant is allowed. Letters of application must include the author’s name, full address, phone number, date of birth and a brief biography or resume.

Submitted materials will be returned to the applicant only if a stamped, self-addressed envelope is provided.  Requests for the return of submitted materials must be clearly stated at the time of application.

Deadline

Applications must be received by November 27, 2015.  Submission must reach URDC on or before the deadline.
