The Whitby Chamber of Commerce and The Association in Support of the Whitby Performing Arts Centre have combined efforts to present seven deserving students each with $3000 towards their post-secondary education.  Finalists will be asked to present or perform at the Young Leaders Awards night May 28th, 2015.  

Deadline for submission is 5:00pm March 27th, 2015. Not currently accepting submissions. Please return for updates.

Selection criteria as follows:

$3000 Business & Entrepreneurial Leader Award 

 

  • Relative of a member or employee of a member of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce 
  • Full-time enrollment in first year post-secondary school in your designated field for fall 2015
  • Demonstrated leadership and entrepreneurial skills and in any field including self-employment
  • Proven characteristics of leadership, innovation, creativity
  • Average of 75% or higher

 

$3000 Performing Arts Scholarship in one of: Theatre & Dance, Music or Visual & Technical Arts (2 new categories to be announced!)

 

  • Resident of the Town of Whitby
  • Enrolled in first year post-secondary school for fall 2015 in your designated field: theatre or dance; music; visual arts, graphic design, film, television or video production, video game design
  • Demonstrated past experience in your field of study
  • Average of 75% or higher

 

$3000 JCI Community Leader Award

 

  • Open to all grade 12 students in Whitby whose volunteer contributions have made a positive impact in their communities. Political work is excluded
  • Demonstrated leadership in non-profit or charitable sector
  • Average of 75% or higher
  • A 500 words essay providing a brief description of your community contribution and its impact. Please include:

 

  1. How you have shown leadership, innovation and creativity to take action to solve a local problem or address local priorities or how your contribution made a difference in the organizations you helped
  2. Why did you get involved and for how long have you been involved
  3. What do you think the long term impact of your contribution will be
  4. How many people were benefited
  5. How did you engage others on your efforts to make a difference in the community
  6. How your community has affected you

 

The following information is required for each of the above:

 

  • 350-500 word essay on how you meet the criteria
  • Proof of academic performance
  • Copy of a letter of acceptance to post-secondary program in chosen category
  • 2 Letters of reference: 1 relevant to category applying for, 1 character reference (not a relative)
  • Resume
  • Completed application form (attached)
  • Any additional information you believe to be relevant
  • Creative component (for arts awards)

 

Creative Component:

 

• Dance: 3-5 minute solo in either ballet or contemporary • Music: 5-25 minute piece • Graphic Design/visual arts: best 3-5 pieces • Performing arts/technical arts: 3 minute reel or monologue

 

*Creative component for 2 new arts categories to be added soon.

Please provide submission packages containing the requested information to The Whitby Chamber of Commerce at 128 Brock Street South, Whitby, ON. L1N 4J8 by June 30th, 2014. Email submissions accepted addressed to darla@whitbychamber.org with "SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION" in the subject bar. 

 

Incomplete submissions or submissions not meeting these requirements will not be considered.  Please DO NOT send originals, submission packages will not be returned. 

 

 

 

*Applicants may apply to more than one category, however, are only eligible to win one

 

Finalists will be invited to attend the Young Leaders Awards on Thursday, May 28th 2015. Finalists will be expected to perform or present a piece for judging and awards will be presented at the end of the night. Finalists will be notified early April and details on performance or presentation will be provided at that time.

 

Due to the volume of submissions, only those selected as finalists will be contacted.
